Here you will find a chronology of important events in the struggle for civil rights for African-Americans from 1502, when the first African slaves were brought to the New World, to the year 2000. Click on a date to read about the events that occured in a particular year.

This website is a companion to Professor Jack M. Balkin’s What Brown v. Board of Education Should Have Said (NYU Press 2001). Check out the book if you are interested in learning more about the history of and the legal issues involved in Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case that declared unconstitutional state segregation in public elementary and secondary schools.
